DHS-1960 Event Progress Page

The DeVilbiss High School Class of 1960 Held its Forty-Year Reunion on
June 10, 2000--It Was A Spectacular Event, Worthy of the New Millenium!

Notes from the May 9th Luncheon Meeting:

For those of you who were not able to attend our 11th luncheon, we had another great turnout. Present were Dave Wise, Cindy Baer Jazwiecki, Jerry Gardner, Evy Hummon Kummerle, Ovid McLaughlin, Steve Wexler, Sue Steele Woolford, Kay Fell King, Helen Vogan Babcock, Mike Burkett, Sally Guyer Erd, Mary Gladney Young, Bart and Nadine (Brown) Schroeder, Karen Smith Maxson, Sarah Kennedy Cannon,  Ron Thompson, Doug (Scott) Laumann, Heney Deen, Carole Asendorf Lanier,  Don Scouten, and William Melot.

  • Heney Deen had brought a videotape of most of the football games from 1956 through the early 60's that he had acquired from the Hall of Fame dinners.  Conrad Lippencott was there and will incorporate some of the football shots into the class video. Also Conrad had a demonstration of the video wherein he morphed a number of classmates from their Freshman picture to their Senior picture to their current photo which he had captured at several of our luncheon meetings plus he will be taking everyone's picture as they enter the African Lodge for the reunion dinner.
  • Sue Steele Woolford announced that we have reserved a total of 69 nights at the Wyndham Hotel (30 rooms, 3 people have reserved for 4 nights, 3 people have reserved for 4 nights, and the rest are 2 nights and 1 night reservations).  As a result the Hotel is giving us the Press Room on the lower level (the Press Room is an extension off the restaurant and lounge) from 5:30 until 10:00 p.m. on Friday night as a hospitality suite.
  • There will be a number of activities on Friday including the Arawanna wine and cheese cruise which is fully booked with a waiting list of 9. There is the option of a 3 hour dinner cruise leaving at 6:30 from the other side of the river for those who still want to take a cruise but were closed out of the Arawanna.    We will see what the overflow is and decide how to handle that later.  There is a very nice restaurant at the hotel as well as down the street, known as Bagpiper's plus the 3 new restaurants which have opened across the river, Cousino's Navy Bistro, The Real Seafood Company, and Hoster's Brew Pub.  It might be best to designate the dining area at the hotel for reservations since a number of the out of town people are looking for a group activity on Friday night.
  • I noted in a recent Blade article that Citifest just announced the "Rally by the River" entertainment schedule for the 2000 Summer season and on Friday, June 9, the Homewreckers and Rock Covers will entertain on the Riverfront next to the hotel. Thus we may be able to do something similar to what we did at our 30th reunion which was to have a meeting place to hear the concert and then adjourn to the hospitality suite at the hotel.  At this stage we have made the determination to hold the reservations to 48 for the Friday night wine and cheese cruise and to the first 48 on Saturday night for the cruise to the zoo which will board at the hotel at approximately 4:30 p.m. and leave the zoo at approximately 12:00 a.m.  Unless I get a surge of requests for Friday night the best bet may be to direct the overflow reservations to the dinner cruise rather than try to reschedule the wine and cheese cruise.  Also, The Toledo Museum of Art has a Friday night program until 10:00 p.m.  You can eat in the cafeteria at the Museum (the food is quite good) and on Friday the 9th they are featuring The Griswolds (a blues band) and the Masterworks Chorale will be singing selections. (see www.ToledoMuseum.org.)
  • Steve Wexler is organizing a "competitive" golf outing at Ottawa Park on Thursday with t-times starting at 1:00 p.m.  Contact him if you are interested.
  • Thanks again for all the work everyone is doing and we hope to see you at the May 23  meeting.

Hey, gang! Here's what the Reunion T-Shirts look like! That's Steve Wexler, by the way.

All of the luncheon meetings have had great turnouts!. If you can possibly make it, you should try to attend one of the future meetings. Be sure to invite other classmates to attend with you! As you can see from the meeting notes below, these sessions are productive and they also show how much work is involved in making this reunion a success! If you can spare some time, your help would be appreciated so join your classmates for lunch!

The next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2000, 12:00 at the Macomber High School cafeteria, which is now open to the public. Use the parking lot off of Monroe Street and enter through the side door that faces the parking lot. These luncheons are an opportunity for fellowship and to discuss our 40th Reunion plans so please try to make it if you can. The luncheon meetings will be held every month. Additional luncheon meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, May 23 and Tuesday June 6.

If you would like to help out, please contact a member of the committee or just attend one of the monthly luncheon meetings. There is a lot of work involved in an event as large as this one, so please volunteer to help! This is a great opportunity to renew old acquaintances and contribute to making our 40th Reunion one we will always remember!

Notes from the April 11 planning luncheon meeting:

For those of you who were not able to attend our 10th luncheon, we had our best turnout ever.  Present were Dave Wise, Bart Wagenman, Cindy Baer Jazwiecki, Jerry Gardner, Evy Hummon Kummerle, Connie Sander Johnson, Dave Rathke, Ovid McLaughlin, Steve Wexler, Sue Steele Woolford, Kay Fell King, Helen Vogan Babcock, Tim Soster, Dick Eastop, Mike Burkett, Sally Guyer Erd, Carole Ackerman Birndorf, Bill Nostrant, Mary Gladney Young, Janet Alspaugh Wing, Dale and Helen Vogan, Chaz Mewhort, Dave Rathke, Paul Tait, Jim Keiser, Verna Smith Bella, Bart and Nadine Schroeder, Karen Smith Maxson, Laurie Sprague Gilmore, Lois Sunderman Whiteman, George Pugh, Wally Barrett, Don Scouten, William Melot and Jeff Brenneman.  Missing were, Sarah Kennedy Cannon, Steve Adams,  Carolyn Schuster Kreidel, Ron Thompson, John Odam, Faith Conklin Vlcek, and Jim VanDeilen.

The meeting was rather large and boisterous but a lot of fun.  Conrad Lippencott was there videotaping conversation and memorabilia which a number of our classmates had brought with them including the 1960 Deviltries program and Junior play program.

Dave Rathke and Sue Steele Woolford are coordinating the Friday night hospitality room at the Wyndham Hotel, hoping to arrange a large room where we can get together. There was also much enthusiasm for the wine and cheese cruise on Friday night which will be BYO and Bill Melot said he would arrange for coolers, etc.

Steve Wexler will coordinate the Saturday night Arawanna cruise from the Hotel to the Zoo dock and back.  The boat carries 48 passengers and if we exceed that number we will schedule a second run.  Steve will follow up with Shawn McCarthy, the captain of the Arawanna, to coordinate the number of trips.  Steve will be staying at the hotel and since he is in charge of the decorating committee he is thinking about having the first run leave early at 4:30 to 4:45 and the second run leaving at 5:30.  I believe it takes about an hour round trip and we would then have a return run at 11:00 and a second at 12:00.  Steve will organize and coordinate this based on the number of reservations we receive.

Sue Steele Woolford and Steve Wexler will also set up tables for the photographer and the videographer so that everyone will have their picture taken and a short  video greeting as they arrive.  Also, Steve will see to the coordination of the table for the shirt and sweatshirt sales.  Steve advised the committee that all profits from those sales will go to the DeVilbiss Alumni Hall of Fame Committee.  He again had samples and the embroidered golf shirt is very nice as are the other articles.  Bart Wagenman and Sue Steele Woolford will see to the placement of the dance floor and DJ.

Jerry Gardner and Bart and Nadine Schroeder will be handling the sign in tables and have a rather large group of volunteers and Jerry and Nadine will coordinate same along with Ovid, Ron Thompson, Tim Soster, Janet Alspaugh Wing, et al.  We will need at least two tables for the sign in.

Bart Wagenman will coordinate the size of the overflow tent and dinner.  It was emphasized that we need to receive reservations as soon as possible so that we can make sure that we have the correct size tent.  Bart has attended other functions at the Zoo that have hosted over 400 people and has said that they have been very enjoyable but he will need to make a determination around mid May concerning the final size of the tent so again get your reservations in as soon as possible.

The program coordinators, Evy Hummon Kummerle, Jerry Gardner, Dick Eastop and Ron Thompson, are working on the evenings program.

Tim Soster brought an extensive scrapbook of photos and memorabilia and he and Sue Steele Woolford are going to see if they can combine collections and produce another collage cover as we did for our 20th reunion which was a lot of fun since it had a number of photographs, articles and cartoons that ended up being its own highlight.  Sarah Kennedy Cannon and Mary Gladney Young have been working on the reunion book.  Sarah has some back surgery scheduled and Karen Smith Maxson volunteered to work with Mary Gladney Young to put the finishing touches on the booklet.

Dave Wise, Treasurer, reported that reservations were coming in but that everyone should complete their forms and get them in as soon as possible since a number of commitments have to be made based upon the number attending, etc.

Scott Laumann was not present but he will be putting together name tags that will feature the senior photograph plus first names large enough to read across the table.

Steve Adams was not present but he had called me earlier to advise that everything was in order for the golf outing and to get your reservations in ASAP.  He encourages single or husband and wife reservations and he will match everyone up so that they will play in a foursome.  Bart Schroeder and Steve Wexler will be assisting.  It will be a scrambles format so everyone is encouraged to play regardless of ability.

Dave Rathke said the Sunday brunch is under control and that the hotel puts out quite a spread in the dining area overlooking the river.  It will be a good place to meet, greet and say goodbye.  If for any reason you could not make any of the Friday or Saturday night festivities hopefully you could come to the brunch on Sunday morning.

Notes from the March  meeting:

For those of you who were not able to attend our 9th luncheon, we had a great turnout.  Present were Dave Wise, Cindy Baer Jazwiecki, Jerry Gardner, Bart Wagenman, Evy Hummon Kummerle, Connie Sanders Johnson, Dave Rathke, Ovid McLaughlin, Steve Wexler, Sue Steele Woolford, Kay Fell King, Helen Vogan Babcock, Doug (Scott) Laumann,  Tim Soster, Dick Eastop, Mike Burkett, Sally Guyer Erd, Carole Ackerman Birndorf, Bill Nostrant, Mary Gladney Young, Carol Asendorf Lanier, Sandy Harrington Simpson, and Faith Conklin Vlcek.

  • Video taping will be done at the main event. The video taping would be at no cost for the class but he would then take orders for that evening's video at $20.00 per video.  He also proposed doing a tape consisting of various shots of memorabilia, old photos and yearbook pictures, that he would incorporate into a video that he would then offer at $15.00 per video but that process would cost the committee $100.00.  It was decided that the committee would foot the $100.00 for the memorabilia video and since the video shot that evening was at no cost to the committee that Mr. Lippincott would be allowed to market those videos that evening.
  • In addition, Sue Woolford has scheduled a still photographer to be present who  will take a photograph of every couple entering which would then be published in a black and white booklet available for purchase with the individual attendees  being able to purchase a color photograph of themselves if they so desire.  Again, there would be no cost to the committee and the still photographer and booklet was also approved.
  • Dave Wise reported that he had spoken with the owner of the Arawanna and they would make the boat available to us for $125.00 per hour to ferry classmates from the hotel to the Zoo with it taking approximately 1 hour for a round trip. Thus, $250.00 would cover the boat leaving at 5:00 p.m. and arriving at the Zoo dock at 5:30 p.m. and then leaving the Zoo dock at Midnight and reaching the hotel at 12:30.  The boat carries 48 passengers and if we have more than that there could be two trips, one at 5:00 and another at 6:00 and the returns at 11:00 and 12:00.  A charge of $5.00 per person would be appropriate
  • Also, the boat would be available Friday night for a wine and cheese BYO cruise and again the rate would be $125.00 per hour.  Dave Wise said he would include a reservation form in the mailer to see if there was any interest for this but it would certainly be a lot of fun and very enjoyable.
  • Steve Wexler has lined up the t-shirt/sweatshirt lady.  These will be offered for sale at the party and are very impressive.
  • Evy Kummerle, Jerry Gardner and Dick Eastop are taking care of the entertainment at the reunion with Dick Eastop being the MC for the evening.  Evy has requested that if anyone can make slides of any photographs or other memorabilia that they might have she will put them in a slide cassette and show them that evening.  Ron Thompson has the "Kingston Trio" group under control.  Jerry Gardner, Ovid McLaughlin, Tim Soster and Bart and Nadine Schroeder will be working the sign in table and anyone else interested in helping them should give them  a call.
  • Scott Laumann presented several samples of name tags and it was decided to go with those with larger print so that all of us old timers could read them while sitting across a table. Scott will put the high school yearbook senior picture on each name tag of the attendees with the name printed thereon.
  • Sarah Cannon and Mary Young are putting together the information for the reunion booklet which will be sold for $12.00 and delivered that night or $15.00 for those that have to be mailed.
  • Sue Woolford stated there were already 11  room reservations at the hotel and anyone else wishing to make a reservation should call  her at 874-2457 so that she can make sure you are included as part of  the DeVilbiss High School group and get a break on the regular weekend rate.
  • Steve Wexler is working on  prizes for the golf scramble and Steve Adams has made arrangements at Ottawa Park on Friday, June 9, for the golf outing.  Bart Schroeder also e-mailed me and he has volunteered to help Steve with the golf outing.
  • After recalculating the costs and determining that we might have a fairly substantial crowd an additional tent may be required.  It was decided to charge $50.00 per person for the dinner which should cover the cost of the DJ, table decorations, name tags, tent and other miscellaneous items.
