DHS Trivia

Our Forty-Year Reunion, Held in 2000, Was A Spectacular Event!
Imagine How Great Our Fifty-Year Reunion Will Be!

"Cake Eaters"

Prior to 1953, the Libbey football team had beaten DeVilbiss thirteen years straight.  The 1953 game was at Libbey stadium.  As the DeVilbiss team came from the bus and entered the locker room at Libbey stadium (with its dirt floor), in the center of the room there was a large garbage can upside down with the lid on top on which was a large cake with white frosting and in black letters was written "CAKE EATERS." Everyone went quiet at the sight of that cake. Then, Hilton Murphy unleashed a vigorous pep talk at the end of which he clobbered the garbage can and the cake flew everywhere.  We almost tore the door down and proceeded to beat Libbey 25-0, or something like that. Some years latter it occurred to some of us that Libbey could not have been so dumb as to put that cake in our locker room and we confronted Murphy telling him we knew it must have been him, Dave Hardy, Don Black or Tom Inman, our coaches. He denied it and still does (at least to me).
